A Day of Service

As you may know, President-elect Obama has dedicated January 19th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as a national day of service and AALEAD has answered his call by working with several local organizations to bring together a service event to help the community.

Students, volunteers and staff will be working together to create packages of sanitary and health care items for local homeless shelters as well as cards and care packages for patients and their families. We are now asking the community to help us gather the necessary items, so that we can do all the assembly and leg work needed to get these items to those who need them most.

For the homeless shelter packages we are in need of the following:
  • toothbrushes
  • toothbrush covers
  • soap
  • shampoo
  • razors
  • Heat Relief Tablets
  • washcloths
  • Alcohol Prep Pads
  • Neosporin
  • combs
  • baby/hand wipes

(individual "hotel sized" items are preferred, but all sizes, as well as related items, not listed above, will be accepted)

For the hospital packages we are in need of the following:
  • old magazines or books for patients and families to read (less than one year old and gently used, for both children and adults)
  • simple games or toys for young patients to use while at the hospital (no stuffed animals due to allergy concerns)

Please help if you are able!! If you have any of these items lying around your house or you'd like to order new ones and have them shipped to our office, we'd love to make use of your kind donation.

Any items to be donated can be dropped off at the AALEAD office, 11141 Georgia Avenue, Suite 515; Wheaton MD, 20902. We may also be able to arrange for the items to picked up, please contact us if you would like to inquire about this possibility.
